Origins

In the immediate aftermath of France's catastrophic defeat by Prussia in early 1871, the Paris Commune, a revolutionary government was declared by socialist radicals in Paris. Extremely weak in the wake of their defeat, the Royalist government fled with loyalist troops to Versailles. With the army gone, and bolstered by their seizure of the National Guard armory in Paris and the cannon within. Ad-hoc militia units were formed, and with cannon in tow they marched the 12 miles to Versailles and laid siege. Already demoralized, and uneasy about firing on their own countrymen, the defenses of the Royalist government quickly collapsed. The French Aristocracy fled to what French colonial holdings weren't lost to Prussia, evacuated by the French Navy which remained in Royalist hands, and established a government-in-exile headquartered on the Fortress-Prison of Devil's Island in French Guiana. With organized royalist opposition shattered, the Paris Commune was expanded and the People's Commune of France was formed.

Aftermath

Occupied with its new colonial holdings, and benefiting from the continued division of its defeated rival, Prussia left its revolutionary neighbor to its own devices. Royalists quickly moved to secure their holdings in the Caribbean, fortifying and arming them against attacks from the Commune that would never come. Communards in France made efforts not to repeat the mistakes of their revolutionary forebears and quickly began massive land reform projects in the countryside, while leaving the Catholic Church alone.
