Getting Started: Your First Days in Icebound

This guide covers the basics every new arrival needs to know to get started.

By now you've read the Server Rules & Story Primer, completed Character Creation, finished the Tutorial, and been placed in the game world.

For an overview general functions, UI, and broader concepts, please reference the New Player Guide.

NOTICE: Icebound is currently in its Beta Playtest phase. Features, systems, and content are subject to change. Please also note that the specifics below are for the current Beta area, and not the full game. Check back here at launch for an updated guide.

We also greatly appreciate new player feedback on how to better streamline these first steps in the game, so please don't hesitate to give suggestions on our Forums or ask questions in the Discord

Arriving & Exploring Boilertown

You will start the game from the Medical Tent. You're encouraged to talk to the doctor (double-click him) and he'll provide you some context as to why.

NPCs on Icebound who's name is in gold provide functions to the player. We strongly advise you to take your time and explore this town area and these NPCs. They often will provide directions, guidance, and lore points to better help you navigate the game world.

For now lets look at a few essential NPCs in town:

  • Dock Hands can be double clicked to access your Storage (Your Bank, for longtime UO veterans)
  • Public Market to shop for goods from other players, you will likely start with a few coins based on your background and may want to visit the Market to get gear or supplies to account for what you plan to do, but more on that next.
  • Job Foremans
  • Guides

Gearing Up

Since you've settled on your character concept and chosen your starting skills, you'll have begun with some supplies from character creation to get you going in those skills. Use the Skills page on the wiki if you want to go more in depth, but every character starts with 25 in Survival and Scavenging to make sure you can get moving right away.

Survival gives you access to crafting recipes that turn low end materials into makeshift gear. It won't last long, but it should be enough to get you started. You can access this by using the [craft command, or by going to the topbar, selecting Craft, and navigating to the Survival menu.

Of course, you'll need materials first, and Scavenging is a great way to get some. In town, there are scrap piles just south of the large overhanging rock and cave, right by the crafting shed.

Double click a scrap pile to gather scrap supplies, then process them at the salvage machine to turn them into usable materials. These materials can be used in Survival Crafting or other crafting skills to make the gear you need.

Newbie Dungeon

The best place to begin your Combat journey is the old mineshaft northeast of Boilertown:

Here you'll find rats and spiders to train against, along with debris and other resources you can use to raise some of your gathering skills.

Rest Areas

Regardless of how you want to progress your character, you'll have to deal with carry capacity and gear durability, and you'll eventually deplete intrinsic resources such as Fatigue, Resolve, or Sanity. These systems exist to promote resource scarcity and give consequences to your actions out in the world and to help immerse your character in the setting. These will need to be replenished somehow, and the easiest way is to go rest.

Rest Areas are public spaces built for taking it easy, similar to a tavern in a more fantasy setting. You'll know you're in one when your buff bar shows a Rest Buff icon:

Sandbox World & Roleplay

There's a lot more to discover beyond what this guide covers. Like the original UO, Icebound is a sandbox: you are responsible for your own fun, and there are many ways to find it. No one can tell you exactly what to do, or how to best enjoy yourself within the parameters of the game engine and the server rules and setting. That's on you to explore.

But that doesn't mean you need to work it out alone. This is a persistent, multiplayer experience. The best way to find your place is through other characters: build relationships, take risks, and let your character's story take shape through what you actually do in the world.

If we missed something here, you need help getting pointed in the right direction, or you're looking to jump in and find roleplay or events, or just anything at all, other players and staff are eager to help. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the Player Help section of our Discord
